Christmas Above the Clouds (2025)
A Christmas Carol in the skies - NOT a movie about the Mile High Club
Because what a nervous flier needs is some ghostly visits that make them question their life choices…
I am choosing to believe that the writing team behind 2024’s Trivia at St Nick’s, reunited here, saw my note about how that movie had some solid writing but lacked a real Christmas plot, so went all out with THE quintessential Christmas storyline for this year’s entry to the Countdown to Christmas. This is also the first entry of 2025 to feature longtime Hallstars in both leading roles and seasoned writers, and it shows up in the quality.
This movie retells the classic story while on a transcontinental flight from the U.S. to Australia, with the requisite Hallmark love story added in for good measure. But in this case they almost did it too well - Ella Neezer (note: I would have gone with Eva Neezer for the character) was almost too unlikeable! While she went on the journey to understand the errors of her ways and want to make amends, she was so unlikeable I really kinda wanted Jake (the ex with whom she reunites aboard the flight) to reject her in the end. Erin Krakow was solid, as expected from a Hallstar who is also balancing an ongoing series on the network, but like I said - borderline too unlikeable.
This movie was chock full of classic Carol tropes - Tiny Tim (complete with a pageboy cap - who doesn’t know a young man with a jaunty fashion sense) and Dickensian-costumed carolers (my kryptonite), this was a solid retelling of a well-known story. Doesn’t hurt that Tyler Hynes showed up with his handsomeness firing on all cylinders - undoubtedly a warning of what he’s bringing to the final installment of the Three Wise Men trilogy…
You’ll like this if…
You enjoy classic Christmas storylines and… Tyler Hynes.
