All I Need for Christmas (2024)

Songs. Software. Serendipity. Seriously?!?

Honestly, if I’d seen that tagline beforehand, I would have had trouble keeping my eyerolling under control.

Maggie is struggling singer who refuses to heed her manager’s advice to move on from her 1960s Janis Joplin-era mentality about the music industry (complete with VW van for travelling in), insulted to her core when he suggests she try using a smartphone to record her work in progress. The nerve!

Archer Donovan - a nepo-baby business scion name if there ever was one - is just that… and also a music technology entrepreneur who is partially estranged from his only sibling over an inheritance issue.

Feeling dejected and with literally nothing else to do and nowhere to go at the holidays, Maggie returns to her family’s Christmas tree farm to seek inspiration before quickly getting roped in to leading the local children’s choir rehearsals for the holiday concert. Meanwhile, Archer has rented a nearby log cabin (classic - a very nice cabin!) for the season where he is reunited with his sister and her kids for Christmas. Ah, bless.

I truly don’t know why this was released under the Mystery banner - nothing mysterious about it… man meets woman, woman makes music, man and woman fall in love. The end.

Not as twee as many in the annual Countdown, and decently watchable even if entirely predictable.

SCORE: 5/10
