A Castle for Christmas (2021)
All the holiday plaid
Seriously. There is some kind of jaunty Scottish tartan in every shot in this movie. I don’t hate it.
Brooke Shields plays bestselling novelist Sophie Brown who, in an effort to escape some bad press lands at the doors of Dun Dunbar, a Scottish castle where her grandfather was once the groundskeeper. Cary Elwes is Duke Myles Dunbar, an aristocrat struggling to keep up with the cost of running an aged castle who reluctantly agrees to sell it to Sophie.
But don’t you worry, the friends-to-lovers trope comes on strong in this movie and what better setting than a Scottish castle at Christmastime, complete with a dog names Hamish and a magical snowfall. Ahh… yuletide bliss.
As Christmas movies go, this was what I would consider a solid Sunday afternoon watch. And I do appreciate having leads who aren’t 25 years old lamenting “where is he already?!?”
Did you know?
Supposedly, Cary Elwes’ family member, John Elwes, was the inspiration for Ebeneezer Scrooge!
