A Merry Little Ex-Mas (2025)
It’s all about the mother(ship)
Another new entry to Netflix’s Christmas lineup, this movie sees the return of 90’s screen queen Alicia Silverstone alongside Oliver Hudson as the titular exes who are navigating their first Christmas “consciously uncoupled.” Also along for the ride - fellow 90s darling Melissa Joan Hart (underutilized IMO) and Jameela Jamil (perfectly cast).
So we have some recent exes navigating a separation, a new girlfriend, and a potential fling. All while also balancing two young adult kids figuring out who they are themselves, one of whom has brought home for the holidays a Harry Potter-obsessed partner.
But how can they carry on old traditions, start new ones, and create a new normal for their family?
Don’t you worry! In a light and crisp 90-minutes they do so easily.
Unlike Champagne Problems, this movie screams “Christmas!” in very scene, from baking montages to selecting a real tree, and from hosting a family dinner to a sledding mishap the Griswolds would appreciate, the standard tropes abound.
Instant classic? Nah. But go ahead and throw it on on a Sunday afternoon. Entirely predictable, you won’t feel bad if you have it on as background noise while you go about your own holiday baking.
This is a minor note - of all the names - WHY was the leading man named Everett?!? As a true stan of The Family Stone, there can only be one Christmas movie Everett.
All Kate and Everett want for Christmas is an amicable divorce and one last holiday as a family, but new flames and old feelings complicate their plans.
You’ll like this if…
You love an entirely predictable romance and watched Clueless on the daily back in the mid-90s.
